AHMADIYYA YOUTHS CONVERGE ON BENIN
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Nigeria Youth Organization- The Majlis Khudammul Ahmadiyya is to converge on Benin on August 5th to 8th ,2010, at Itohan Girls Secondary School, Sapele Road, for it annual convention with the Theme – Islamic Approach to Youth Development the surest Way To Nation Building.
Islamic lectures, Quranic and speech competitions, sports and visit to Hospital, Old People’s Home Motherless Babies Home and the Prison are some of the activities slated for the three day meeting in the Edo state capital.
Notable topics for discussions during the three day gathering will covers Towards Achieving Unity in Islam; Agreement or Antagonism, Accountable Leadership and responsible Followership Key Ingredients For Project Nigeria, Economic and Socio-Political justice; The answer To Nigeria’s Civil Crises.
The High point of the event is the lecture on the theme of the conference - Islamic Approach To Youth Development: The Surest Way To National Building to be held at Oba Akenzua Cultural Center Airport Road Benin City.
Speakers at the occasion are Dr Saeed Timehin, of Lagos State University ,and Co- Chairman Muslim Lagos State Inter-religious Council ,NAREC, Dr Abdul Majeed Hassan Bello Of the University Of Uyo and Barrister Badr Mohammed Basir.
The Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomole is the Guest of Honour. Other special Guests are Chairman Oredo Local Government, Special Adviser To the Governor on Education, Permanent Secretary Edo State MINISTRY OF Education, Dr Hassan - a Lecturer at the University Of Benin. President and National Youth Council of Nigeria, top officials of federal government agencies and security services would also graced the convention.
Dr Mashood Fashola, Amir –Head Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Nigeria will lead guests from the Islamic community.

Optical Cable Linking Africa-Europe Launched

A seven thousand kilometer submarine fibre optic cable linking Africa to Europe has been launched in Lagos State, South West Nigeria.
The project handler, the Main One Cable Company said that the cable is laid from Seixal, Portugal through the coast of West Africa to connect Ghana, Nigeria and some other countries in the West Bank.
Chairman of Main One Cable Company, Mr. Fola Adeola, said the project would facilitate the much required international connectivity in West Africa, a region where internet penetration remains significantly lower than other parts of the world.
The company said it had completed the first phase of the project, which it described as an important step towards lower international communication costs. That will also mean a significant expansion of internet access via submarine cable which will in turn lead to greater efficiency and a more competitive business environment.
Value Added services
Funmi Opeke, the Chief Executive Officer ,CEO ,of Main One Cable Company aid the project will also lead to the creation of new service-oriented business in the ICT sector, such as regional service and call centers, and internet based commercial and financial services, such as payment services and money transfers.
In the words of Funmi Opeke, Main One” would be operating as an open access system providing capacity to operators and service providers in the region on a non-discriminatory basis. This would enable consumers enjoy access to affordable and reliable international communications that will reduce the cost of doing business, create new jobs and engender favourable conditions for faster economic growth”.
She told journalists at an interactive after the official launch of the much cherished ICT product that ten companies have signed on to use the service of the satellite cable offering Internet Provision, IP, via Tier 1 interconnection partners. Opeke stated that the company is in process of developing a comprehensive suite of IP service after roll out before the end of 2010.
Currently, Main One has the capacity to deliver internet service globally via Tier 1 interconnection partners in Telehouse London, who are able to provide onward connectivity to over 120 cities around the world.
To accentuate this, during the launch in Lagos, proceedings were relay live to London, South Africa and Bangalore in India to the admirations of guests and investors.
Also speaking at the launching, Lagos state Governor, Babatunde Fashola, described the project as a symbol of renewal of the commitment of private sector operators in the telecommunication industry in Nigeria.
The National Communication Commission, NCC, acting Executive Vice Chairman, Bashir Gwandu, the launch of Main One submarine cable was “a dream comes through”.
According to him, he encouraged the Main One Cable company to invest in the Nigerian communication industry by reducing the license fee by 50 percent. He urged the company to ensure that its fee was affordable to the people.

The Main One Cable Company is wholly owned by African investors – African Finance Corporation, Nigeria; Pan African Infrastructure Development Fund, South Africa; FBN Capital, Nigeria; Skye Bank, Nigeria and Main Street Technologies, Nigeria.
